Loch Ericht

I have now recovered from my first fishing trip of the season and feel good now that we have the rest of the season to look forward to. I would just like to state that I am not an angling snob. My first trip of the season did not involve flies or fly rods. I wasn't sure if it was appropriate to have a blog entry about ledgering for trout as my blog is all about fly fishing and flytying etc.In some quarters it is perhaps frowned upon to ledger with worms for trout but I don't really see the harm in it as long as those participating in it are responsible and enjoying themselves.
My day out at Ericht began at 3 am. Tam and I arrived at Dalwwhinnie about 6 30. The weather wasn't the best but off we went along the track along the east shore of the loch until we came across a suitable area to fish. We set up camp then Tam went about getting the breakfast cooked. After some nice rolls on sausage and haggis we set about fishing for Ericht's trout. As the day progressed we caught a good number of fish . Some were returned while others were kept to be cooked in Tam's smoker. The weather did brighten up enough to make it a pleasant day out. I don't normally bait fish as I soon get bored after catching a couple of fish however it was a very enjoyable day out in a wild fishing location in the company of a friend and making plans for the rest of the season.

  2. Impressive brace of fish for so early in the season! Certainly a very successful trip! And mighty fine effort for bearing what I presume was a very cold day!

Have never fished Ericht myself - might just give it a go now. How does it generally fish on the fly?

  3. Don't really know how well it does with the fly. I had a few casts on it last year in April. No fish! but didn't really spend enough time fly fishing to have any real opinion on how it would fair with the flee. I would be of the opinion that there are far better lochs to explore with the flee.

Thanks for the comment , Allan.

  4. Thanks for the info! The sheer size of the place is a bit of a worry, tend to bank fish mainly...

Out of interest, ever fished the north calder? I live in Coatbridge and have always thought about trying it! Might even have a go tomorrow, might be early but one can live in hope!

  6. I have fished the North Calder.I fished it a couple of years ago behind Caldervale school. Caught wee bandies. once met a bloke with a good halfpouder maybe a little bigger.
The area has a bit of a ned population during the summer as they tend to like drinking there tonic etc down the Glen. So I wouldn't recommend it. Dont get me wrong I have never had any bother . I just dont like being down there on my own. I'm making my first trip of the season to Hillend tomorrow. I will be fishing at the narrows/ Boathouse bay. I'll be there after I finish work about 4PM If you are in the area perhaps you might like to cast a flee there.

    Cheers, Allan.
